Furnishings, furniture, and equipment for our new GO STAR hospital are ready for shipment to Ethiopia

The shell of the new GO STAR hospital wing at Jimma University Hospital was handed over for use during our 2019 bike tour in a festive ceremony organized by our foundation.

However, the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic made it impossible to open as planned in spring 2021. The electrical installations and water supply are currently being installed. Our trauma surgery department with 75 patient beds, 3 operating rooms, and various ancillary rooms will be available to us from late summer 2022. This is a milestone in our long-standing trauma surgery work in Jimma.
In recent years, we have established contact with around 35 Swiss hospitals in Switzerland, neighboring countries, and other organizations. Our goal was to procure well-maintained, used furniture, equipment, and devices from their inventories for our humanitarian GO STAR project in Jimma, Ethiopia.
In recent months, we have received valuable and useful items from various hospitals in Switzerland and Germany, as well as from the Swiss Army, including 75 hospital beds with contents, cabinets, 60 chairs, 30 office desks, 31 refrigerators, operating tables, X-ray equipment, various devices, surgical aids, and consumables. Please take a look at the list of donors who have supported us in this huge project. Thank you very much.

Ten days ago, the donated goods were transported from our temporary storage facility in the Jura to Pratteln BL by four semi-trailers belonging to the Planzer Group for loading into shipping containers. The time-consuming and complex customs formalities with various countries are currently being processed. We hope that the six large shipping containers will soon be transported by rail to Rotterdam, where they will be shipped by sea to Djibouti (Africa). From there, the journey will continue by land for approximately 1,300 km to Jimma, Ethiopia. We are confident that the shipment will arrive at our GO STAR hospital in Jimma at the end of August 2022, largely intact.
We owe this logistical masterpiece to two companies. Not only did they provide their logistical expertise, but they also made their comprehensive and professional services available at special rates as a humanitarian contribution.
